A CMS is not a database, and that is the whole comparison
Framer gives you collections and items with per-plan limits — 10 collections and 1,000 items on Free, 10 collections and 2,500 items on Pro. That is a content model: blog posts, case studies, team members, things an editor writes and a visitor reads. What it is not is a place for data your users create. There is no schema you can query, no server-side logic and no end-user authentication.
So the question is not which tool is better but which noun describes what you are building. A booking system, a CRM, an internal tool, a shop with accounts, anything where a person signs in and their data is theirs — none of that is a Framer site, at any price. Framer’s password protection secures a page; it does not create user accounts.
Every NorthernGo app gets a Supabase PostgreSQL database, email and password authentication and GDPR account deletion from the start. That makes it the right tool for the application case and the wrong tool for a marketing site, where Framer’s design control is worth far more than a database you will not use.
The published site is portable. The source is not.
Framer publishes every site as standard HTML, CSS, JavaScript and static assets, server-rendered from React at publish time, on an AWS global edge network with automatic HTTPS. That output is open web standards and you can take it elsewhere. Framer also documents self-hosting through a reverse proxy. CMS content exports to CSV or JSON via plugins.
What you cannot take is the source. There is no export of the React components or the design file as editable code — what you get is compiled output, which you can host but not meaningfully maintain. Leaving Framer means rebuilding in whatever comes next, using the exported content as the starting point.

One place Framer is quietly good on GDPR
Framer hosts everything in AWS facilities in the United States and publishes no EU residency option, which is a real gap for a European buyer. But it does something most tools do not: by default a Framer site needs no cookie banner, because Framer Analytics does not track, collect or store anything that identifies a person. Add Google Analytics or HubSpot and that changes — but out of the box, the compliance surface is genuinely small.
That is worth respecting. A marketing site with no personal data collected and no banner is a cleaner GDPR position than an application with an EU database and a consent flow to get right. The two are answering different questions: Framer minimises what is collected, NorthernGo controls where what is collected lives.
When Framer is the better choice
