The honest answer: most people asking this question want Cursor
If you searched for a Cursor alternative, you are probably a developer, and a developer is not NorthernGo’s user. Cursor’s strength is working inside a mature repository with its own conventions — reading it, editing it, and leaving behind ordinary source that goes through code review, CI and your existing deployment. No app generator does that, including this one.
NorthernGo starts from nothing and produces a whole application: a database, a login, a live address, an installable PWA. That is valuable precisely when you do not have a repository, a pipeline or a developer. It is close to worthless when you do.
The one case where the comparison genuinely bites is the non-technical founder who has been told to use Cursor. Cursor assumes you can read a diff, resolve a merge conflict and run the project locally. If none of that is true, you will spend the subscription learning tooling rather than shipping, and a generator that hands you a working URL is the better first step.
Local editor does not mean local AI
Cursor runs on your machine, which makes it easy to assume the AI does too. It does not. Cursor’s own data-use page states that all requests go through its backend — including requests made with your own API key — because that is where the final prompt is built. Codebase indexing stores embeddings and metadata in Cursor’s database, with plaintext deleted after each request. No local model option is documented.
For most work that is fine. It matters when the code is the sensitive part: a client codebase under NDA, an unreleased product, something covered by a data processing agreement that does not list Cursor as a subprocessor. Privacy Mode gives zero-data-retention agreements with the model providers and guarantees no training on your data, which is a strong control — but it is a contractual one, not an architectural one. NorthernGo’s local generation is architectural: the request does not exist to be retained.
Worth noting on the other side: Cursor has SOC 2 Type II and publishes a trust centre. NorthernGo has neither. If your objection to cloud AI is procedural rather than architectural, Cursor answers it better.
