Answer engine optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making a page suitable to be quoted as the answer to a question, rather than merely ranked as a link. It targets AI assistants, featured snippets and voice results, where the user gets a response instead of a list.
What changes when the result is an answer
A traditional result page sells the click with a title and a description. An answer engine extracts a passage and presents it, often crediting the source with a small link. Two consequences follow. Your content has to be extractable — a self-contained paragraph that survives being lifted out of its surroundings — and you may get the citation without the visit.
That reframes the unit of optimisation from "the page" to "the passage".
What actually helps
- Answer the question in the first paragraph, in complete sentences, without depending on the heading above it or the section below it. If it only makes sense in place, it will not be quoted.
- Use question-shaped headings that match how people ask, then answer immediately underneath. One question, one answer, no preamble.
- Be specific. Numbers, limits, versions, prices, named constraints. Vague copy is not quotable, because there is nothing in it to quote.
- State the entity plainly. "NorthernGo is an AI app builder that runs models locally in the browser" tells a machine what the thing is. "Welcome to the future of building" tells it nothing.
- Add schema markup so the page's type, author and question–answer pairs are explicit rather than inferred.
- Keep it current. Answer engines prefer sources that look maintained, and a page contradicting reality gets quoted contradicting reality.
What to watch out for
AEO is not a separate discipline that replaces SEO, and treating it as one leads to bad decisions. Answer engines still draw on the same crawlable, indexed web. A page that ranks nowhere is rarely cited, so technical health, crawlability and genuine authority remain prerequisites rather than legacy concerns. What AEO adds is a writing and structuring layer on top.
Two more things worth being honest about. Measurement is genuinely worse. Citations in AI answers are inconsistently reported, referral traffic from assistants is small and often mislabelled, and no tool gives you a reliable citation share. Expect to sample manually by asking the assistants your own questions. And success can mean fewer visits: if your paragraph answers the question completely, the user has no reason to click. That is a real trade-off, not a bug — being the cited source builds recognition even when the session never happens.
The related term generative engine optimization covers much the same ground with a different emphasis; the two are used almost interchangeably in practice.
Frequently asked questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Answer engines are built on top of crawled and indexed web content, so the technical basics — being crawlable, being indexed, having genuine authority on the topic — are prerequisites. AEO adds a layer about how the content is written and structured so a passage can be extracted and quoted on its own.
